Glitter Clay Art

In my previous post of finger painting with clay I discussed the process of using modeling clay (instead of the uber-messy real paints) to make a mini-masterpiece. If your little one wants to make her art sparkle and shine -- or you're just looking for something different to do -- add in a pink or two of glitter. Your child can use this technique to make a paint-like clay picture or just have a ball exploring the materials.

Here's What You'll Need:

• Modeling clay - Go for a somewhat soft, easy-to-spread clay. While you shouldn't tear open the package while you're in the middle of the craft store to inspect the clay, give the box or bag a gentle smoosh-like feel. If you think that there are rocks in the package, but the clay down. It's probably old and way to hard to use for this activity. If it's somewhat pliable, you're in good shape.
• Paper -- I don't suggest using construction (or any other thin) paper. Modeling clay tends to get greasy. It will likely soak through the paper, making a mess. Instead, go with a card stock, poster board or cardboard type of paper. If you don't want to buy something new, use the back of an old cereal or cracker box.
• Glitter -- Choose one color, two colors or a rainbow of super-shiny sparkles!
• A paper plate

Where's What To Do:

1. Pull the clay apart into dime or quarter-sized gobs.
   
2. Put the gobs on a paper plate (or you can reuse a piece of cardboard).
3. Sprinkle glitter directly onto the plate and the clay. Let your child roll, mash and sprinkle the sparkles onto the clay. The glitter will begin to adhere to the greasiness of the clay. If the glitter seems to be disappearing into the clay, add more.

4. Have your child "finger paint" on a piece of paper with the sparkle clay. She will use her fingers to smooth the clay onto the paper, making it stick. Encourage her to swirl the colors together or even add a pinch more of the glitter as she works.

Even though the glitter typically stays put, if you are planning on displaying your child's art (i.e., hanging it up) you may want to seal the sparkles in. Help her to paint a layer of clear-drying school glue over the project. This will add even more shine and keep the glitter from brushing off so easily.
