I spent the better part of a week looking for wooden
clothespins. I know, I probably should have better things to do with my time.
But, when I couldn’t find them at the first two stores I became kind of
obsessed. I went to close to a dozen stores before finally finding one (yes,
only one sad little package) at the local dollar store. That said, I had to
leave them on the shelf. They were plastic pins, and those just won’t do when
it comes to holding the paint that this craft requires.
When I was about to give up, I finally found wooden
clothespins. Hint: I did not find them in the laundry or cleaning section of a
big box store (apparently no one hangs up laundry anymore). I did find them at
the craft store.
And now, on to the art-making…
Here’s What You’ll Need:
·
Wooden clothespins
·
Tempera paint
·
A paintbrush
·
Pom poms (in colors that match the paint)
·
Googley eyes
·
Clear-drying school glue
Here’s What to Do:
1. Paint
the clothespins. Try a pastel Easter-themed color. Pour the paint onto a palette
(or use a piece of wax paper as an inexpensive alternative). Add white to each
color, blending it to a lighter hue. This color-mixing activity adds a splash
of science to your child’s Easter craft. Cover one side of the clothespin with
paint, let it dry and then turn it over to paint the other. Repeat to make a
few more.
2. Glue
two googley eyes onto a pom pom. Make a few in the same colors as the clothespins. Your child can do this while the paint’s drying.
3. Match
the pom poms and clothespins by colors.
4. Position
the pins so that the bottom (wider part) is at the top. This makes two bunny
ears.
5. Draw
a line of glue onto one half of the clothespin’s bottom clasp (the pincher
part). Adding the glue to one half means that your child can still open the
clip later on. If she puts glue in the center she won’t be able to.
6. Press
the pom pom onto the glue.
